To get to the Cellar Door Bar we walked a short way from our hotel to the Aldgate East Station (Bus Stop J), took "Bus 15 Charing Cross" to Savory Street and then walked a short way to the Cellar Door Bar. The Cellar Door Bar is actually located between the Savory Street bus stop and the prior bus stop. We saw it out the right side window as we passed it. We were hoping it wouldn't be too far a walk back from the bus stop and it wasn't.
The venue of the Cellar Door Bar used to be a London Public Restroom. The entrance is a stairway out in the middle of the sidewalk. The first time we ever came here we had a heck of a time finding it as we did not know the entrance was a stairway in the middle of the sidewalk. We walked up and down the street looking at the addresses on the building and could not find it until we spotted this structure in the middle of the sidewalk that looked like a London Underground ("Tube") entrance.
The left photo below is what you see before you open the door to go into the bathroom. The door is totally clear glass and you can see everything that is inside the bathroom, including the toilet! The first time I ever went to this venue I thought this was very strange. Is this some kind of London culture where people don't care if they can be seen sitting on the pot?
However, the photo below on the right shows what that same door looks like after you lock it. It becomes totally opaque and nobody can see in or out! It is like magic! But, if you don't fully lock the door when you are inside, you will end up putting on quite a show for the next person that walks by as the door will remain clear and "see through"!
When we left the Cellar Door Bar at about 10:30 PM, Bus 15 was no longer running as far as the bus stop where we would need to get on. Instead we decided to take the London Underground back to our hotel. It was a little bit longer of a walk than we usually like to do on cold nights, about 0.4 miles, but at least it was no longer raining or windy. We walked to Temple Station which is by the River Thames. From there we tood the "District Line" train towards Upminster and got off at Aldgate East, the London Tube Station right by our hotel.
